Statistics from the Global Cancer Organization (GLOBOCAN) show that each year Vietnam records more than 24,500 new cases of breast cancer and 10,000 deaths, which is a worrying number. In particular, the age of Vietnamese women with breast cancer tends to be getting younger.
Dr. Hoang Thanh Tuan - Deputy Director of the Aesthetic Center, 108 Central Military Hospital - said that for breast cancer patients after treatment, there are people at a very young age who have to suffer from physical defects. Breast reconstruction for cancer patients is a surgical procedure that helps restore the shape and size of the breast after the patient has undergone a mastectomy or partial mastectomy. This process not only has aesthetic significance but also helps improve the psychology, confidence and quality of life of the patient.
According to Dr. Hoang Thanh Tuan, physically, breast reconstruction after surgery for breast cancer helps restore body shape, regain body balance, and reduce the feeling of physical deficiency after surgery.
Improved mobility: Some breast reconstruction methods (especially those using autologous tissue) can help improve stiffness and limited mobility in the chest and shoulder area after surgery.
Reduced Discomfort: When you have only one breast, the imbalance can affect your posture, spine, and cause neck and shoulder pain. Reconstruction helps to reduce these problems.
Psychologically, it helps to increase self-confidence so that the patient feels more complete in their body, thereby improving their psychology and emotions. Patients can easily integrate into the community, helping them regain comfort and confidence in their married life.
"Breast reconstruction is not simply a cosmetic surgery but also an important part of the recovery process of breast cancer patients" - Dr. Hoang Thanh Tuan emphasized.
Understanding this, 108 Central Military Hospital organizes the program "Breast reconstruction after cancer treatment" to accompany breast cancer patients across the country.
The hospital organizes a humanitarian breast reconstruction program, including 4 rounds in 2025.
The first phase took place on February 28 and March 3, supporting about 50 patients whose health had stabilized 2-3 years after treatment, had had one or both breasts removed, and had health confirmation from a specialist. Patients were exempted from breast implants and surgery costs, only paying for hospitalization and testing. The surgeries were performed by foreign experts in collaboration with doctors from the 108 Military Central Hospital.
To participate, patients need to register at the hospital, bring their ID card, health insurance card (if any), medical records and health certificate.
