On November 6, Binh Dan Hospital announced that the unit had just performed emergency surgery to drain the hematoma and stop the bleeding for Mr. N.V.H (24 years old, HCMC) right after a circumcision at home performed by a tattoo artist.
Mr. H was admitted to the hospital with his entire penis swollen and completely deformed, with blood clots spreading from his penis to his pubic area. His penis was bruised like a beetroot, about 15 cm in diameter. The tip of his penis had cuts and jagged stitches that were still bleeding.
The patient said that before that, he searched on social media with the keyword "circumcision at home". Mr. H randomly chose a tattoo artist, not knowing the address. The tattoo artist came to his rented room to perform the circumcision for Mr. H.
When the tattoo artist used a machine to cut the foreskin and used metal pins to close the skin, the pins came loose and blood flowed profusely. The tattoo artist sewed up Mr. H with thread and quickly left.
After a while, seeing the bleeding not stopping and the blood clot growing larger in the lower body, Mr. H called the tattoo artist. The tattoo artist had turned off the phone. He contacted the service booking address again, but the page was also turned off.
Mr. H called an acquaintance and was taken to a medical facility near his residence. After first aid, Mr. H was transferred to Binh Dan Hospital.
In the emergency room, doctors assessed that Mr. H's case required emergency surgery to stop the bleeding and drain the hematoma. The surgery lasted about 60 minutes, and doctors carefully exposed each part of the injury and removed the hematoma.
Next, the doctor proceeded to re-cut the foreskin that had been cut and stitched haphazardly before. The blood vessels flowing on the dorsal surface of the penis were also stitched to stop the bleeding.
After surgery, the patient's genitals were less swollen, the pain and tension were reduced. On the third postoperative day, the wound progressed well, no more bleeding, the patient was discharged from the hospital and cared for the wound at home.
Doctor Dang Quang Tuan - Deputy Head of the Department of Andrology said that Mr. H was lucky to be taken to the hospital in time, when the hematoma had not yet become infected or necrotic.
Mr. H is not the first victim of circumcision services performed at places other than medical facilities. During the procedure, because the person performing the procedure did not have the knowledge or experience in handling accidents and complications, he was confused and handled the situation incorrectly.
Be careful with home circumcision services
According to Dr. Quang Tuan, the genitals are sensitive areas with many nerves and blood vessels, so if circumcision is not performed correctly, it can cause bleeding and damage to this organ. When sterile conditions are not met, the patient is at risk of surgical site infection.
Nowadays, many tattoo parlors and spas advertise home circumcision services and sell tools that are said to be able to be used for self-circumcision, leading many people to mistakenly believe that this is a simple surgery that anyone can perform.
Dr. Tuan added that there have been cases where the procedure was performed incorrectly, leading to necrosis when the patient lost his entire penis. The patient now suffers permanent physical and mental damage, and the patient's sexual function cannot be restored.
