Garlic is a pungent herb that has been used for centuries for its many health benefits, but it is best known for its immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which are beneficial for heart health, says Dr Eileen Canday, Head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai (India).
Meanwhile, lemon juice is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, making it a great addition to a heart-healthy diet.
Dr. Eileen Canday points out the benefits of combining garlic and lemon together, including:
Garlic
Lower bad cholesterol (LDL): Some studies show that garlic can help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglyceride levels in the blood, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease.
Lower blood pressure: Garlic can help lower blood pressure, which is important for people at high risk of heart disease.
Anti-inflammatory: Garlic contains anti-inflammatory compounds like allicin, which help reduce inflammation in the body, an important factor in preventing heart disease.
Lemon juice
Contains vitamin C: Lemons are a rich source of vitamin C, which has antioxidant properties that help protect blood vessels from damage and prevent the formation of plaque in the arteries.
Lower cholesterol and blood pressure: Some studies show that compounds in lemons, especially flavonoids, may help lower bad cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
Combining garlic and lemon juice may be even more effective in supporting heart health, as both ingredients work synergistically to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and improve blood circulation.
Note
While garlic and lemon may provide some cardiovascular benefits, they are not a substitute for maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and controlling risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, and stress. If you have a heart condition, consult your doctor for a treatment plan that is right for you.
