On March 4, Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital said that hospital doctors had just successfully performed emergency surgery for a severe hemorrhagic hemorrhoid case, requiring a total of 6 units of blood to resuscitate and treat.
The 54-year-old female patient (residing in Nam Dong Ha ward) was transferred from a lower level hospital in a state of severe anemia. According to the patient, the condition of fresh blood in the stool has lasted for about 2 months but has not been completely treated.
At the time of admission, the patient was tired, dizzy, with pale mucous membranes; the rectal prolapse did not shrink on its own. The results of soft-tube colorectal endoscopy determined that the patient had grade III hemorrhoid hemorrhage.
Blood counts showed that the red blood cell count dropped very deeply, determining severe anemia due to prolonged blood loss. Doctors said that if not treated promptly, this condition could be life-threatening.
Immediately after that, the patient was given emergency 4 units of red blood cells, and then transferred to the Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation for emergency surgery. During the surgery, the team recorded that the hemorrhoid prolapsed, occupying almost the entire periphery of the anus, in which a large prolapse in the position of 5 hours was bleeding continuously.
Doctors proceeded to suture the flowing blood vessels, and at the same time treated the remaining hemorrhoids using the Longo method. After surgery, the patient continued to receive 2 more units of blood for resuscitation.
After 24 hours, the bleeding situation was completely controlled, the patient ate and exercised normally. After 5 days of treatment, his health stabilized and he was discharged from the hospital.
According to doctors, hemorrhoids are common diseases but can cause dangerous complications if not treated promptly. In the mild stage, blood may only stick to toilet paper; when the disease progresses, blood drops or flows in streams. Prolonged bleeding easily causes anemia, shock and complications such as hemorrhoid hemorrhoids causing pain, infection, and even life-threatening.
Experts recommend that when there are signs of bloody stools, people need to go to the doctor early to determine the cause, avoid prolonged self-treatment. To prevent and limit recurrence, fiber should be increased, drink enough water, maintain exercise, and limit sitting for long periods or straining vigorously when urinating.
Currently, Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital is implementing many modern treatment methods such as Longo surgery, laser surgery... contributing to improving the effectiveness of hemorrhoid treatment in the area.
