On the afternoon of February 2, the leader of Yen Thanh District General Hospital (Nghe An province) said that the unit had received two children suspected of being poisoned by rat poison.
At noon of the same day, two sisters P.V.K. (4 years old) and P.T.H. (9 years old), residing in Phuc Thanh commune (Yen Thanh district) were taken to the hospital by relatives in a state of pale skin, vomiting and convulsions.
According to the family, the same morning, the two sisters followed their mother to the rice fields. While their mother was working, H. picked up a bottle of pink liquid, thinking it was soft drink, and then opened it with her younger brother to drink.
Not long after, the younger brother began to turn purple and have convulsions, while H. also vomited and trembled.
"The younger brother drank more, so his symptoms were more severe and his prognosis was poor. After initial first aid, we transferred the two children to a higher level for treatment. Based on the children's statements and clinical symptoms, we suspect this is rat poison, not pesticide," said a doctor at Yen Thanh District General Hospital.
Both sisters have been transferred to Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital for further treatment.
