Risks of drinking too much chamomile tea
Chamomile tea is one of the favorite herbal teas because of its light flavor and relaxing properties. However, nutritionist Keri Gans (New York School of Nutrition, USA) said: "Cucumbers are generally safe, but drinking too much can sometimes cause nausea or vomiting".
Sharing the same view, nutritionist Dr. Samantha Dieras, Director of Outpatient Nutrition at Mount Sinai Hospital (USA) shared that these reactions are rare, but can occur if consumed too much over a long period of time. She also noted that people who are allergic to chamomile or herb should be careful, as they may experience skin irritation, swelling or even anaphylactic shock.
Side effects and recommendations for safe doses
Chamomile tea can cause sleepiness, especially in people who are taking sedatives. Combining the two can increase sleepiness, affecting concentration.
Another risk is increased blood loss. Cucumbers contain natural coumarin, which can increase the effects of blood thinners like warfarin, says Gans. Therefore, people who are taking prescription drugs need to consult a doctor before taking them regularly.
In addition, chamomile tea can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills and affect estrogen- sensitivity diseases such as breast or uterine cancer. There is currently not enough data on safety for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
To ensure safety, Gans recommends: There are no specific limits, but drinking one to three cups a day is considered safe for most healthy adults.
Chamomile tea is still a healthy drink if used properly. However, drinking too much can be counterproductive, especially for people who are taking medication or have underlying medical conditions.
