Does constipation go away on its own?
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Director of Surgery, Phuong Dong General Hospital, in many cases of mild constipation, without serious symptoms, this condition can improve on its own without complicated medical intervention. However, patients need to adjust their diet, exercise and toilet habits.
If constipation is caused by a diet lacking fiber or not drinking enough water, changing diet can help improve it in a few days. In cases of lack of exercise, increasing physical activity also supports stimulating the digestive system.
Conversely, prolonged constipation or related to pathologies such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bowel obstruction can be difficult to cure on its own and require examination.
Initial treatment at home
Increase fiber: Green vegetables, fruits such as apples, pears, oranges; whole grains such as oats, whole wheat bread, brown rice; beans, almonds and chia seeds are good sources of fiber, helping to support digestion and soften stools.
Drink enough water: Water helps soften stools and supports stools to move through the intestines. You can supplement filtered water, broth or natural fruit juice. According to source content, you should drink about 2 liters of water per day and limit carbonated soft drinks, coffee, and strong tea.
Increase exercise: Walking 20-30 minutes a day, practicing yoga or gentle abdominal stretches can stimulate bowel movements and help reduce constipation.
Maintain the habit of going to the toilet: Do not hold back your bowel movements when needed. You should spend time going to the toilet at a fixed time, for example, in the morning after waking up, in a comfortable space.
Support measures: Warm lemon water in the morning can support digestion. Honey is also mentioned as a natural laxative measure, helping to soften stools.
If constipation is prolonged or abnormal symptoms appear, patients should see a doctor to determine the cause and have appropriate treatment.
