Prof. Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, announced the above information at the opening ceremony of Vinmec Smart City International General Hospital (Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi) on October 21.
Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan said that the Prime Minister has issued Decision No. 201 approving the Health Facility Network Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, which affirms the encouragement of the development of specialized and high-tech private hospitals providing high-quality services, advanced technology and a number of private hospitals at international standards. Encourage public-private partnership, private investment, and the provision of health care services to meet people's needs. In particular, the Plan has set the target of expanding the scale of private hospital beds, striving for the rate of private hospital beds to account for at least 10% by 2025, 15% by 2030 and 25% by 2050.
In recent years, the private hospital system has been constantly developing. Currently, in addition to the public medical examination and treatment system, the whole country has 384 private hospitals, accounting for 24% of the total number of hospitals; however, the number of beds in private hospitals only accounts for 5.8%.
In Hanoi, these targets are slightly higher, with 44 private hospitals accounting for 29% and nearly 3,000 beds accounting for 6.5%. Most private hospitals focus on specialties such as eyes, maxillofacial surgery, dermatology, cardiology, oncology, etc. with less than 50 beds, and the number of general hospitals with more than 100 beds is very small. These targets are still far from the targets in the Plan approved by the Prime Minister. That means that the Ministry of Health and related agencies still have a lot of work to do and the room for private healthcare to develop is very large.
"Investing in establishing private medical facilities such as Vinmec is necessary and in line with the Party and State's orientation, meeting the people's medical examination and treatment needs. The hospital will be a prestigious medical examination and treatment facility, providing high-quality medical examination and treatment services not only for the people of the capital and neighboring areas. The hospital actively cooperates and exchanges experiences and knowledge in medical examination and treatment with domestic and foreign medical facilities, develops specialized techniques, applies modern management methods, and soon approaches international quality standards. At the same time, it actively participates in supporting humanitarian medical examination and treatment for people in remote, isolated and extremely disadvantaged areas.
"The Ministry of Health always supports and creates favorable conditions for domestic and foreign investors to establish private hospitals and clinics in Vietnam in the spirit of equality, fair competition, and compliance with Vietnamese law," Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan emphasized.
Vinmec Smart City International General Hospital has a scale of nearly 60,000 m2, a capacity to serve at least 70,000 visits/year, including 14 specialties, notably obstetrics and gynecology, surgery with endoscopic and minimally invasive surgical methods to treat digestive diseases, orthopedic trauma, and strong application of 3D technology to personalize treatment.
