The small, cramped rented house in Suoi Ram neighborhood, Cam My commune, Dong Nai city is where Ms. Bui Dieu Hien (born in 1994) and her three children have sheltered for many years.
After family upheavals, Ms. Hien became a single mother, without a stable job because she had to stay home to take care of her youngest child with a serious illness.
Ms. Hien has three children: Bui Phuong Trang (15 years old), Bui Minh Thang (11 years old) and the youngest child Tran Hoang Gia Bao (born in April 2025). Both older children are obedient and know how to help their mother with housework.
It was thought that a peaceful life would pass, but all the burdens of the family suddenly fell on the shoulders of the young mother when Gia Bao suffered from a rare disease from the early days of life.
According to Ms. Hien, Gia Bao was born naturally, healthy like any other child. However, just a few days after being discharged from the hospital, the baby suddenly stopped breastfeeding, turned purple all over his body, did not cry, and did not react normally.

Panicked, she carried her child to the hospital for emergency treatment. Initially, doctors suspected that the baby had a blood sugar infection and quickly transferred him to Dong Nai Children's Hospital for in-depth tests. The results then continued to make the young mother collapse when Gia Bao was diagnosed with metabolic disorders accompanied by pneumonia and congenital heart disease. Doctors determined that the baby's chances of survival at that time were extremely slim.
Gia Bao was appointed for emergency blood filtration. However, the cost of more than 30 million VND exceeded Ms. Hien's ability. With no other choice, she painfully asked to take her child home while the baby still had to breathe oxygen.
At that time, I didn't have a single penny left in me, I ran around borrowing money and couldn't borrow from anyone. I just hugged my child and cried...", Ms. Hien choked up sharing.
Luck came at the most seemingly desperate moment. A doctor from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Dong Nai Children's Hospital supported funding and contacted colleagues at Children's Hospital 1 to receive Gia Bao for emergency treatment.
Thanks to the help of doctors and philanthropists, Gia Bao was saved.
Currently, Gia Bao cannot walk, cannot sit, cannot speak. All daily activities completely depend on his mother.
Over the past time, Ms. Hien has not been able to go to work because she has to be by her child's side. All expenses from rent, milk, medicine to hospitalizations, the single mother has to borrow everywhere.
Once my child was hospitalized, I had to knock on everyone's doors to borrow a few hundred thousand VND to pay hospital fees. Now I owe too much, many people no longer have the ability to lend me money," Ms. Hien said sadly.
Not only that, Ms. Hien's biological parents also passed away many years ago. Without support, the young mother shouldered the burden alone to raise three children in a cramped rented room. Although life was full of difficulties, Ms. Hien never thought she would give up...
Every time I see my child lying motionless, not knowing how to speak, not knowing how to call mom, my heart aches so much. As long as my child is by my side, and there is still a chance for treatment, I will try my best," Ms. Hien said.
Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Tran Quoc Hoi, Head of Suoi Ram neighborhood, Cam My commune, Dong Nai City, said that Ms. Bui Dieu Hien's family is in particularly difficult circumstances in the locality.
I hope philanthropists and readers near and far will pay attention and share so that Ms. Hien and her child have more conditions to continue treating baby Gia Bao, helping the family reduce the burden in difficult times," Mr. Hoi shared.
