From a female garment worker with a stable job, Ms. Nguyen Thu Ha (born in 1999, residing in Tien Hung commune, Hung Yen province) was forced to quit her job to accompany her child on the journey to regain life. In April 2025, Ms. Ha's life was almost turned upside down when her daughter Nguyen Anh Duong (born in 2020) was diagnosed with early-onset Crohn's disease with IL10RA mutation.
Few people know that the first signs of the disease appeared when baby Duong was only 7 months old and had to have an artificial anus implanted.
I thought that when my child had an artificial anus, it might be normal, I didn't think it was an early sign of the disease. Until my child was 5 years old, taking him to the doctor, I knew my child had that terrible disease," Ms. Ha said with tears in her eyes.
Ms. Ha said that, according to doctors, to have the opportunity for long-term treatment, her daughter needs to have stem cell transplants with an estimated cost of more than 1 billion VND. The above amount is beyond her family's ability.
Since the day the disease was discovered, almost every month, Ms. Ha and her child have gone to the National Children's Hospital for treatment for one to two weeks. Monthly costs range from 10 - 20 million VND; if they have to use off-the-books, the cost will be higher. For this treatment alone, Ms. Ha and her child have been in the hospital for 3 consecutive months and have not been able to return home.
Unable to hide the mother's heartache, every time she mentions Anh Duong, Ms. Ha chokes up: "Looking at my child thinning day by day, her hands and feet covered in bruises because of venus removal and IV fluids, I can only cry. There are days when my child is too sick to sleep, I feel extremely sorry for her, hug her, and encourage her to try harder. Every time the doctor informs me that I have to have more tests or new treatments, I worry about the results and where to borrow money to continue treatment for my child.
Witnessing Ms. Ha's family's upheaval, relatives and neighbors could not help but feel sorry. Over the past time, everyone has joined in encouraging and supporting some treatment costs with the desire to add motivation for her family to overcome the difficult period.
According to the leader of Tien Hung Commune People's Committee, the case of Nguyen Anh Duong is of concern to the local authorities, he is entitled to 1,750,000 VND/month under the category of severe disability; his mother (Ms. Ha) is supported with 500,000 VND/month as the person directly taking care of him. Duong's illness is a rare disease, the treatment process is prolonged, for the current situation of Ms. Ha's family, that is a very large cost.
