On the evening of September 22 and early morning of September 23 (Vietnam time), the Laver Cup 2024 tennis tournament took place with matches that will decide the championship. After the second day, the world team led the European team with a score of 8-4.
The final day of competition opened with a doubles match, which many believed would put the European team at a disadvantage. They had lost the event two days earlier and there was no doubles specialist on the team.
The third day was the pair Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud against Ben Shelton - Frances Tiafoe. While somewhere waiting for another defeat to leave the European team behind with a score of 11-8 (the team that reaches 13 first will win), Alcaraz and Ruud surprisingly played effectively.
They broke two games to lead 5-1 before ending the first set with a score of 6-2 in just 38 minutes. The second set was more tense, lasting more than an hour, but in the end, the two European players still won 8-6 after the tie-break.
Then it was the singles match between Daniil Medvedev and Shelton. Despite the short break, the American still made his opponent lose.
Medvedev won the first set after a tie-break with a score of 8-6, but in the second set, he lost 5-7. The two players had to play a super tie-break and there, Shelton won 10-7, giving the world team the 11th point, very close to victory.
After Medvedev lost both singles matches at this year's Laver Cup, all hopes of the European team rested on Alexander Zverev in the match against Tiafoe.
Like Medvedev, Zverev lost his singles match on day two and he was also very close to defeat.
Tiafoe won the first set after a tie-break, led 4-2 in the second set and could have ended the tournament with a world championship.
However, he lost his effectiveness and let Zverev win 3 consecutive games, leading 5-4, then ended the set with a dramatic game, breaking the American player's serve.
Entering the super tie-break, Zverev won 10-5 to shorten the score to 10-11, and at the same time pushed the deciding factor into the 12th match - also the last match of the tournament, Alcaraz met Taylor Fritz.
And the Spanish player completed the mission with a 6-2, 7-5 victory, helping the European team win 13-11, regaining the Laver Cup championship after 2 years in the hands of the world team.
This is the fifth championship of the European team in 7 times Laver Cup is organized.
