"The security of the Baltic countries is also the security of Germany," Foreign Minister Wadephul said on August 28 ahead of his visits to Estonia and Denmark.
He mentioned growing threats in the Baltic Sea, including shadow fleets - a term used by the West to refer to Russian ships used to circumvent oil sanctions, as well as cable cuts, phao shifting and disrupting GPS signals.
Mr. Wadephul noted that Estonia and other Baltic countries have issued early warnings about the risks and are eager to further strengthen cooperation in this regard.
Security is also expected to be a highlight in the German diplomat's negotiations with Denmark.
The need to better protect critical infrastructure in the Baltic and North Sea is a priority that Denmark is also promoting as EU Council president. "All of us in Europe benefit from clean beaches, safe trade routes, as well as reliable power and data transmission," he said.
