The Kremlin spoke after a speech by US President Donald Trump, who called the inability to end the war in Ukraine the biggest disappointment of his term. On September 20, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the disappointment was understandable, as Trump has always paid special attention to his efforts for reconciliation.
Mr. Peskov affirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to seek a diplomatic solution, while "making great efforts" to achieve the goal of peace. According to him, the Ukrainian government and some European countries are maintaining a confrontation path, causing obstacles to this process.
Trump had previously said that personal relationships with Mr. Putin could help quickly end the conflict, but the reality was not as expected. He really disappointed me, Trump admitted, while still expressing confidence that Moscow and Kiev would find a way to end the war.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has been proactive in mediation steps. He held a summit with Mr. Putin in Alaska, met with European leaders and welcomed President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. However, these moves have not yet brought clear results.
Mr. Trump also called on European countries to stop importing oil from Russia, emphasizing that falling oil prices could force Russia to end the military campaign. In parallel, Russia announced that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will meet with his US counterpart Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session to discuss many bilateral and multilateral issues.
