A Cambodian military officer informed Thai Military Region 2 that the explosion near the Mum Bei area (Chong Bok) on the morning of January 6 (local time) was due to an accident during the cleaning of a base in the Cambodian side of the border area.
In a letter sent to Military Region 2 of Thailand, Brigadier General Nid Narong - Deputy Chief of Staff of Military Region 4 of Cambodia, and also Chairman of the Secretariat of the Cambodia - Thailand Regional Border Committee - said that Cambodian soldiers are collecting and burning garbage at a base located in Cambodia's sovereign territory.
According to Mr. Nid, the incident occurred at 7:27 am on January 6, in the Mum Bei area (Chong Bok), Preah Vihear province during the process of Cambodian forces conducting sanitation and rearranging bases within their management scope.
While burning garbage, a DKZ bullet left in the garbage pile exploded, injuring 2 Cambodian soldiers, including 1 seriously injured and 1 slightly injured.
The explosion, according to Mr. Nid, caused panic among Thai forces stationed nearby. Sending a letter of explanation was to avoid misunderstandings between the two sides.
Brigadier General Nid expressed regret about the incident and reaffirmed that Cambodia remains committed to resolving the issues peacefully, in accordance with international law.
Mr. Nid emphasized that the Cambodian government and armed forces seriously respect and comply with the ceasefire as well as related agreements, including documents signed on July 28, 2025, October 26, 2025 and joint documents of the third special meeting of the Cambodia - Thailand Joint Border Committee on December 27, 2025, and mechanisms within the framework of the regional border committee between Military Region 4 of Cambodia and Military Region 2 of Thailand.
Cambodia's goal, according to Mr. Nid, is to quickly bring the situation back to normal, ensuring peace, stability and safety for people living along the border between the two countries.
