The US inter-sectoral incident information management system InciWeb said that the Hawk Fire broke out on August 22. By the morning of August 23, the fire had spread about 42.5 km2 and had not yet been controlled.
Local authorities said that the fire was particularly serious, with strong winds causing the fire to quickly spread through areas with flammable vegetation.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo on the evening of August 22 declared a state of emergency in Washoe County.
