The US Embassy opened in Jerusalem on May 14, but the construction of the Embassy complex will continue for the next 6 years. The move of the Embassy was initially largely symbolic as only the Ambassador and Secretary moved here, according to Ynet news.
The consulate building has been converted into the US Embassy in Jerusalem, spanning over 6,000m2, with land use rights up to 25,000m2. In the next 6 years, this land will be used to build a new diplomatic complex of the United States.
To prepare for the opening, the assembly works were carried out at the previous Consulate building. This includes changes in interior, space arrangement, and improved security measures at entrances and fences.
A wall over 3m high and an escape route were built. The basement in the house has been locked for a long time and has been put into use. A luxurious, luxurious room will be built as a residence and office for the US Ambassador.
The US Ambassador to Israel will only be able to use part of the complex for meetings and daily activities after the inauguration ceremony, the news site said.
In the second phase, implemented in the next 3 years, the floors will be added to this project. A new building for the residence and work of the Embassy staff from Tel Aviv will also be built.
Regarding construction costs, Mr. Donald Trump mentioned during a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel last month. Accordingly, the initial plan to build a new Embassy in Jerusalem was up to 1 billion USD. However, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said that the Embassy could be moved to the current consulate building in Arnona at a much lower cost, less than $150,000.
Donald Trump added that he has eventually invested between $300,000 and $400,000 to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem.
