Ukrainian gas company wins lawsuit, Gazprom forced to pay huge compensation

The international arbitration court in Switzerland has ordered Russia's Gazprom gas giant to pay Ukraine's Naftogaz $1.37 billion in damages.

The information about Naftogaz winning the Gazprom lawsuit was announced by Naftogaz CEO Serhii Koretsky.

Since May 2022, Gazprom has violated its contractual obligations on the principle of receiving in person or returning in full when suspending payments. In September 2022, Naftogaz filed arbitration proceedings and Gazprom sought to block them through Russian courts. That effort failed. We now have a final verdict: The court, which includes referees from Sweden, Switzerland and Israel, is completely on the side of Naftogaz," Mr. Koretsky said.

He emphasized that this was an important victory. "The next step is to implement the decision. That is what we will do, step by step, added the Naftogaz leader.

The case involves unpaid fees for services transporting Russian gas through Ukraine.

In May 2022, the GTSOU of Ukraine (GTSOU) declared the point of entry of Sokhranivka as a result of the fighting in Lugansk. Russia refused to redirect the transit of gas to the Sudzha crossing and reduced payment to Naftogaz.

In September 2022, Ukrainian Naftogaz began arbitration proceedings against Russian gas company Gazprom.

When initiating the arbitration proceedings, Naftogaz requested compensation of $150 million for unpaid fees.

In early 2024, the Ukrainian company revised the compensation claim to $843 million and reiterated that, as Gazprom continued to violate the agreement, Naftogaz had the right to increase the compensation claim until the contract expired in January 2025.
