Former Chief of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (China) Dong Jianhua passed away at the age of 89.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Mr. Dong Jianhua, former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and former Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (China), passed away at the age of 89.

Mr. Dong Kien Hoa passed away due to illness at 9:57 pm on September 8 (local time).

Mr. Dong Jianhua is considered to have made outstanding contributions to the "one country, two systems" policy, and is also a prominent patriot and social activist.

Mr. Dong Jianhua was born in 1937 in Shanghai. He became the first Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (China) after this special administrative region returned to China in 1997.

He served as Head of the Special Administrative Region for the first two terms, from 1997 to 2005. During this time, he played an important role in the transitional period of Hong Kong (China) after Britain handed over this territory to China.

In 2005, he resigned as Head of the Special Administrative Region for health reasons. After that, he continued to participate in political activities at the central level and held many positions in the CPPCC.

He successively assumed the positions of Vice Chairman of the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th National Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

The departure of Mr. Dong Jianhua takes place in the context of Hong Kong (China) continuing to implement the "one country, two systems" policy under the management of the special administrative region government and the Chinese Government.

Mr. Dong Jianhua is also known for his role as Chairman of Our Hong Kong Foundation, a policy advisory organization he founded after leaving his position as Head of the Special Administrative Region.
