Kiev Independent reported that during the night of May 5 to 6, Russian air defense forces intercepted a total of 19 drones heading towards the city from various directions.
The incident occurred just days before the Victory Day parade in Moscow and the start of the temporary ceasefire proposed by Russia. The Ukrainian government has not commented on the attacks.
Part of the drone debris fell onto the Kashirskoye Expressway, a major route in Moscow, and rescue workers are working at the scene, Sobyanin said. However, no casualties were recorded.
The drone threat has caused major airports in the region including Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Zhukovsky and Sheremetyevo to temporarily close. Grabtsevo Airport in Kaluga Prefecture is also subject to similar restrictions.
The attack took place during the week of Victory Day commemoration on May 9, a major holiday in Russia to commemorate the role of the Soviet Union in defeating socialist Germany in World War II. Although the Kremlin has invited international guests to attend the parade, many Western officials have rejected the invitation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a three-day humanitarian ceasefire, starting from May 8 to May 10. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected the proposal, calling it a dramatic performance, accusing Russia of trying to manipulate the international community with short-term ceasefire orders that it has no intention of complying with.
Ukrainian President Zelensky has also warned that Russia may stage provincial acts such as arson, blasting or other incidents during the holidays to blame Ukraine. While Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire proposal by an intermediary, Russia has continued to reject it.
