Euronews reported that on March 19, EU foreign policy senior representative Kaja Kallas said that Russia wanted to see the US and Europe divided and stressed that this should not happen.
Speaking directly on the Europe Today program, Ms. Kallas affirmed that the current relationship between Europe and the US is not cracked, and called on both sides to continue to maintain solidarity in the context of unstable world politics.
Kallas said that Europe has not yet participated in any negotiations between the US and Russia on Ukraine, but affirmed that member countries are still trying to grasp the situation of all parties.
Kallas's statement follows a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 18. She said there was a difference between Mr Trump's words - who denied discussing military aid to Ukraine - and Mr Putin's statements when he affirmed that this issue had been discussed in the phone call.
According to a source collected by Euronews, Mr. Putin has asked the West to stop providing aid to Ukraine as a precondition to achieve a 30-day ceasefire. However, Mr. Trump stated in an interview with Fox News that the issue of military aid was not discussed.
However, Mr. Putin still agrees with Mr. Trump's proposal to temporarily suspend attacks on energy facilities in Ukraine. President Trump later said the phone call was constructive but noted that this limited ceasefire had not yet reached the comprehensive ceasefire agreement he wished.
President Putin has set a comprehensive 30-day ceasefire in the context of Ms. Kallas proposing a new military aid package worth about 40 billion euros to Ukraine to promote the supply of fireworks, air defense systems, missiles, UAVs and fighters.
According to the draft proposal that Euronews approached, participating countries will contribute according to their own commitments, meaning that the support package does not require the consensus of all 27 EU member states. The plan also opens the door for EU countries with similar views, such as the UK and Norway, to show a shift towards a voluntary alliance.
Kallas' initiative will be discussed when EU leaders meet in Brussels ( Belgian) on March 20. It is not yet clear whether the 18 billion euros in unusual profits from frozen Russian assets in the EU are included in this support package.
The European Commission is also expected to release a document at the end of March 19 (local time), in which specific proposals are made to strengthen Europe's defense capabilities.
