The phone call between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump took place on March 18, 2025.
President Putin reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the conflict by peaceful means, and expressed his willingness to cooperate closely with US partners to achieve a comprehensive solution.
He stressed that any agreement must ensure sustainability and long-term, address the root cause of the crisis, and take into account Russia's legitimate security interests.
Regarding President Trump's 30-day ceasefire initiative, the Russian side has raised important concerns, including effective monitoring of ceasefire across the entire front line, ending forced military mobilization in Ukraine and preventing the country's military from being reorganized.
Russia also highlighted the serious risks of historical breaches of Kiev's agreements, noting the terrorist attacks by Ukrainian extremist elements against civilians in Kursk province.
The Russian side stressed that an important condition to prevent the conflict from escalating and move towards a political-diplomatic solution is to completely end military aid and share intelligence with Ukraine from foreign countries.
Responding to President Trump's recent request to ensure the safety of Ukrainian soldiers stationed in Kursk province, President Putin affirmed that Russia acted based on humanitarian considerations. He pledged that the Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered would be safe and treated in accordance with Russian law and international humanitarian standards.
During the talks, President Trump proposed a bilateral agreement between the two sides to avoid a 30-day attack on energy infrastructure. President Putin welcomed the initiative and immediately instructed the Russian military to comply.
President Putin also responded positively to President Trump's proposal for maritime security in the Black Sea, and the two leaders agreed to launch talks to clarify further details of the deal.
President Putin informed President Trump that on March 19, Russia and Ukraine will conduct a prison exchange of 175 prisoners from each side. In addition, as a act of goodwill, Russia will return 23 seriously wounded Ukrainian soldiers who are currently being treated in Russian hospitals.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continue efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict through bilateral channels, integrating the proposals discussed. To support this process, Russian and US expert groups will be established.
President Putin and President Trump also discussed broader international issues, including the situation in the Middle East and the Red Sea region.
The two sides agreed to coordinate to stabilize crisis areas, as well as strengthen cooperation on nuclear arms control and global security. This, the two leaders said, will contribute to improving bilateral relations between Russia and the US.
A positive example of such cooperation is the two countries voting together at the United Nations on a resolution on the Ukrainian conflict.
The two leaders expressed their desire to normalize bilateral relations, while acknowledging the common responsibility of Russia and the US in ensuring global security and stability. In this context, they reviewed potential areas of cooperation, including discussions on mutually beneficial economic and energy partnerships.
President Trump supports President Putin's idea of organizing badminton matches between NHL and KHL players in the US and Russia.
The two leaders agreed to maintain contact on all issues discussed.
