Millions of Chinese people struggle amid "oasis" caused by historic floods

Phương Thảo |

These days, floods continue to threaten the lives of more than 33 million Chinese people. Local authorities, rescue teams, volunteers... struggled to fight against floods and make efforts to overcome the consequences.

Heavy rains over the past few weeks have affected 27 provinces and cities with more than 33 million people, leaving at least 141 people believed to be dead or missing, tens of thousands of homes destroyed and causing damage of more than 8.8 billion USD.

The National Meteorological Center continues to issue a yellow alert for storms, forecasting heavy rain over the weekend in some localities such as Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan Province and Chongqing City. Authorities of Giang To province in the Truong Giang river Delta issued an orange flood warning, the second highest level on the warning scale.

The rescue team leads residents to clearly understand the way back in the village, to avoid the risk of boats crashing into walls, power lines or dangerous objects on the water surface. Photo taken in Guangxi (China) on July 11.

Prolonged rain and floods turned many concrete roads in Guangxi Province (China) into rivers. People use motorboats to move between the "oases".

The people trapped were rescued by rescue forces using boats to temporary shelters on July 11.

Floods and landslides have caused many houses to be destroyed and people to be missing. The rescue team mobilized service dogs to search for the missing people.

The landslide that passed through Yuanshan village (Dahe town, Huangmei, Hubei, China) caused many houses to collapse and many people were buried in soil. On July 8, rescue forces successfully rescued a woman from mud.

When arriving at the people's house, the rescue force will use ropes to secure the boat into the fence. The elderly and children were carried down from boats and canoes by rescue forces to ensure their safety.

Lijiaxia hydropower plant (located between the boundaries of Jainca district and Hualien district, Qinghai province, China) began opening the gate to release water from June 18 to prepare for flooding due to rising water levels in the Yangtze River. The China Meteorological Center warned that July and August will be the peak period of typhoons, accompanied by tornadoes and landslides.
