Dozens of senior generals and admirals of the US military will gather at the Navy University in Quantico, Virginia next week to attend a meeting with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
This is the first time in many years that the US has summoned almost all global strategic commanders at the same time - from the Indian Ocean, Pacific, Middle East to Europe.
The official purpose of the meeting was to reiterate the fighting spirit emphasized by Mr. Hegseth and the Trump administration. However, many defense officials believe that there are still bigger problems behind: The ability to reform the command structure, even cutting down a series of senior generals.
President Donald Trump has recently repeatedly called on the military to "streamline and fight more effectively". He also signed a decree renaming the Ministry of National Defense as the "Ministry of War" - a symbolic move but showed a tough stance.
Secretary Hegseth, who was a soldier and then a communications officer, was trusted by Trump to "clear" the military leadership. Since taking office, he has suspended many generals and eliminated gender and race diversity programs, claiming to "deduce fighting power".
A defense official revealed: "Minister Hegseth's official speech only lasted one hour, but we do not rule out the possibility that he will make shocking decisions." The worry is even greater as calling up too many generals at the same time could disrupt global command operations and create security risks.
This event could be a stepping stone for Mr Trump to prepare for a new defense strategy, aiming to prioritize direct conflict with major opponents. Many experts worry that focusing too much on war spirit could overshadow important discussions about technology, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence - areas that are shaping modern warfare.
Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers warned that Mr. Hegseth's quick and lack of transparency in reform could put civil-military relations in the US in a state of tension. Some even compared this event to a "closed court", where all decisions are in the hands of the President and the Minister.
The session in Virginia is expected to last for several days. If Hegseth or Trump announce a major change, it will be a turning point in the way the US operates its military apparatus, which could directly affect the country's global strategy in the coming years.
