The Iranian Parliament will discuss the possibility of increasing the uranium enrichment level to 90% if the US and Israel continue to attack, said Ebrahim Rezaei, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament.
If Iran continues to be attacked, one option is to enrich uranium to 90%. We will discuss this issue in parliament" - he wrote on social network X.
On May 11, US President Donald Trump announced that Iran refused its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons. Afterwards, Mr. Trump said the US could soon resume military operations in the Strait of Hormuz, and even take "much more serious" actions against Iran.
Tehran has repeatedly emphasized that it is not seeking to develop nuclear bombs. Western intelligence agencies have also not found evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.
In addition, since 2003, Iran has applied a fatwa (religious decree) issued by the previous supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which prohibits the production of nuclear weapons.
Also commenting on Iran's nuclear policy, on May 11, Mr. Alexey Pushkov - Chairman of the Information Policy Committee of the Russian Federation Council (Senate) - said that Washington cannot get enriched uranium from Iran without Tehran's consensus.
Collecting nuclear materials and transporting them safely in conditions of military conflict is almost impossible. To do that, peace is needed, an enriched uranium transfer agreement is needed, a detailed action plan with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is needed, and unconditional consensus and cooperation from Iran are needed. Currently, none of these 4 conditions exist. The US can monitor, but cannot obtain enriched uranium without Iran's consent," Mr. Pushkov affirmed.
Also on May 11, Ms. Jennifer Kavanagh - senior researcher and Director of the military analysis program at the Defense Priorities research organization based in Washington, USA, shared that the US should accept Russia's proposal to remove enriched uranium from Iran. According to her, this could help Moscow and Washington expand bilateral dialogue.
“I think Mr. Trump should accept Mr. Putin's proposal to receive high-enriched uranium (HEU) from Iran. If the US and Russia can cooperate to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue, this could be the starting point for expanding bilateral dialogue, including discussions on strategic stability,” she said.
Sharing with the press on May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia's proposal to remove Iran's enriched uranium from the country is still valid.
And in my opinion, this is a good proposal. If everyone agrees, Iran can rest assured that they have transferred this material to a friendly country, which is and will continue to cooperate with Iran in the field of nuclear energy. Iran is not pursuing any other programs, such as the weapons program," the Russian leader said.
