On May 9 (US time), the US Department of Energy announced that "thanks to President Trump's decisive leadership", about 13.5kg of uranium was removed from an old research reactor in Venezuela.
The US Department of Energy called the joint operation between the US, UK and Venezuela "a victory for the US, Venezuela and the world".
Bringing all enriched uranium out of Venezuela safely is another signal to the world about a Venezuela that is restored and innovated," said Brandon Williams, head of the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) under the US Department of Energy.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), this uranium was "safely and securely transported by land and sea from South America to North America" after a "complex and sensitive operation".
This nuclear material was taken from a facility about 15km from the capital Caracas of Venezuela, and then transferred to a complex of the US Department of Energy in South Carolina.
One of the key goals that President Trump publicly pursued after launching a military campaign with Iran in February was to force Tehran to hand over about 408kg of high-enriched uranium. However, so far, that effort has not yielded results.
