The weapons deployed in Kaliningrad are powerful enough to repel any potential attacks by NATO in the context of this alliance increasing its military presence near the regional border, Russian MP Andrey Kolesnik told TASS news agency.
The above statement was made in response to the statement of NATO Commander of the Northeastern Multinational Corps (MNC NE) - Lieutenant General Dariusz Parylak.
Lieutenant General Dariusz Parylak said that NATO countries are significantly increasing their military presence near the Suwalki corridor - a strategically significant strip of land along the border between Poland and Lithuania.
This is the only road connecting the Baltic countries including Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania with the rest of the European Union (EU) and NATO allies.
He is not the first general to announce military reinforcements near our border, especially in the Suwalki corridor. The armed forces of our potential opponent are heading directly towards the Kaliningrad region. Everyone in the region understands that," said Kolesnik, a member of the Defense Committee of the Russian State Duma (Russian Lower House).
If necessary, the Kaliningrad region can defend itself by conducting missile attacks targeting any capital in Europe," he warned.
Russian politicians pointed out that these missiles can carry many different types of warheads. "Therefore, Europe needs to understand that if the Dutch, German and other regiments are deployed near our borders, no one will resist them with pistols. They also need to understand that continental Russia, with all its strength, will protect this westernmost region," he said.
According to Mr. Kolesnik, several squadrons of fighter jets and strategic bombers of NATO countries have been deployed near the Russian border. One of them is based in the Polish town of Malbork, about 40km from the Kaliningrad border, while another unit is based in the Lithuanian city of Marijampole, about 60km from Russian territory.
Previously, in a live dialogue program combined with a press conference at the end of 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia would eliminate all threats to the Kaliningrad region if those threats arose, but he hoped this would not happen. Mr. Putin also warned that any attempt to blockade this Russian territory could lead to a large-scale armed conflict.
The Suwalki corridor is a strip of land about 65km wide located between Poland and Lithuania, with a strategic location between Russia's Kaliningrad territory and its ally Belarus. The blockade of this corridor could isolate Lithuania from its NATO allies in Western Europe.
