Reuters reported on September 4 that a Russian airstrike on Lviv, western Ukraine, near the Polish border, killed three people, injured 30 and destroyed historic buildings in the city center.
The airstrike came a day after Russia attacked a military academy in the town of Poltava with two ballistic missiles, killing 50 people and injuring hundreds more. It was said to be one of Russia's fiercest attacks on Ukraine.
Governor Maksym Kozytskyi said on his social media account that a 14-year-old girl and five children were among the dead. In addition, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said that 35 victims were receiving medical assistance.
In a video posted on social media, the mayor stood amid the rubble of a destroyed building. He said more than 50 structures, ranging from schools to homes and clinics, mostly in the city center, had been damaged. A Reuters witness in the city also confirmed the damage to buildings.
On the other hand, Poland had to send planes to take off for the third time, within 8 days, to ensure the safety of its airspace.
“It was another busy night for the entire Polish air defense system due to long-range air strikes from Russia,” the operational command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said.
Over the past 10 days, Russia has attacked Ukraine with hundreds of missiles and drones, a move some Russian military bloggers have called a response to the recent Ukrainian offensive.
