    The Maut rebels with ties to the group have clashed with Philippine security forces in Marawi City. On the morning of May 23, the Philippine army withdrew most of the city, making Marawi the first city in Southeast Asia to fall to IS.

    Armed terrorist groups have taken control of the city center and set up barriers in several districts.

    The rebels attacked and burned down a prison and many other structures in the city.

    2 soldiers and 1 Philippine police officer were killed in the clashes. There have been no reports of casualties among civilians.

    About 500 Maut rebels with ties to IS are in Marawi.
