US pledges to support Libya unification efforts

The US affirmed that it will continue to coordinate with international partners to support the peace and reunification process in Libya.

On June 30 (Washington time), according to TASS, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that the administration of US President Donald Trump will continue to coordinate with international partners to support the process of unification and stability in Libya.

The statement was made after a meeting between Mr. Rubio and Mr. Saddam Haftar, Deputy Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), held in Washington D.C.

On social network X, the US Secretary of State said that the two sides had exchanged views on measures to promote the unification of military forces in Libya as well as lay the foundation for long-term peace.

According to Mr. Rubio, building a unified military force is an important factor to bring Libya out of the division that has lasted for many years.

We have discussed unifying the Libyan army and building the necessary conditions for sustainable peace," he wrote.

The US Secretary of State emphasized that Washington will continue to cooperate with Libyan leaders and the international community to support a more peaceful, unified and prosperous Libya.

The meeting with Mr. Saddam Haftar is seen as Washington's latest move in efforts to promote political stability in this North African country.

Libya is still facing many challenges after more than a decade of instability since the government of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi collapsed in 2011. This country currently has many power centers and different military forces, making the national reconciliation process quite difficult.

The Libyan National Army led by General Khalifa Haftar currently controls most of the east and some southern areas of the country. Meanwhile, the United Nations-recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) still runs the capital Tripoli and many regions in the west.

Observers believe that the unification of military forces is one of the prerequisites for Libya to proceed to organize national elections and build a more stable governance system.

In recent years, the US, the United Nations and many European countries have repeatedly called on the parties in Libya to strengthen dialogue, reduce tensions and move towards a comprehensive political solution.

Washington's latest statement shows that the US still maintains an active role in international efforts to promote peace and restore the unity of Libya.
