On May 25 (US time), according to Reuters news agency, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that the Strait of Hormuz needs to be opened and maintained in the context that the US and Iran continue to pursue diplomatic efforts amidst the regional situation still containing many tensions.
Speaking to reporters on a private jet while in Jaipur, India, Mr. Rubio made the above statement when referring to previous US airstrikes on Iran.
The Lake Hormuz must be opened and maintained for circulation by all means," Mr. Rubio said, while emphasizing that this is an important issue for regional stability and international trade.
The US Secretary of State also said that the content and language of the draft agreement being discussed between Washington and Tehran may take several more days to complete. This statement shows that negotiations between the two sides are still ongoing, although there are still many issues to be resolved.
The Strait of Hormuz is currently considered one of the most important strategic shipping routes in the world, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. This is the route that transports most of the crude oil and gas exports from the Middle East to the international market.
Therefore, any risk of disruption in this strait could have a significant impact on global energy prices, international supply chains as well as the financial market.
Mr. Rubio's statement was made in the context that the US and Iran are still seeking solutions to de-escalate tensions, ensure maritime security and resolve issues related to Tehran's nuclear program.
However, the actual situation shows that new military developments may still create more pressure on the diplomatic process between the two sides.
