US and Iran sign peace agreement sooner than expected

The US and Iran have remotely signed a memorandum of understanding on ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement is now in effect.

An official said that President Donald Trump signed the agreement, and then Mr. Trump confirmed this information.

The signing ceremony of the US-Iran peace agreement was scheduled to take place in Switzerland on June 19. However, a diplomat from a mediating country and another well-informed source revealed that there had been discussions about signing and implementing it sooner.

Diplomatic sources said that the discussions on accelerating progress aimed at reopening the strait before June 19 were because both sides agreed on that issue.

French President Emmanuel Macron shared a video of President Trump signing a document during dinner in Versailles, France and said that the agreement "opens the way for long-term peace and allows the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz".

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif informed X that the leaders of the US and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding "and initially, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the US will immediately lift the naval blockade".

The meeting between the US and Iranian delegations led by US Vice President Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is expected to continue as planned on June 19 in Switzerland, sources said. The parties are expected to discuss the launch of negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.
