US President Donald Trump on March 7 declared that the US is not responsible for the attack on a school in Iran that killed 175 people, mostly children. He said that an Iranian missile caused this tragedy.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Trump said that according to his assessment, the attack in the city of Minab in southern Iran was carried out by Iran. He said that Iran's weapons were inaccurate and may have hit the school.
A reporter then questioned US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth about the possibility that Iran was the perpetrator of the incident. Hegseth replied that the investigation is still ongoing and believes that Iran is the one who often targets civilians.
The destruction of the primary school for girls in Minab occurred during an airstrike targeting targets of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This is considered the most casualty-causing attack in the war between the US - Israel and Iran that broke out on February 28.
However, Mr. Trump's statement contradicts the investigation results of many Western media outlets. AP, CNN, New York Times and Washington Post news agencies believe that evidence from satellite images and scene images shows that US forces may have destroyed the school during the nearby bombing campaign.
Reuters quoted 2 US officials as saying that US military investigators believe that US forces are likely responsible for the attack in Minab. These people also said that the final conclusion has not yet been drawn because the investigation has not been completed.
Meanwhile, the United Nations condemned the attack, calling it "a serious attack on children, education and the future of a community". The organization emphasized that civilians should never be seen as secondary damage in war.
