US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on May 28 that the US will begin revoking visas for Chinese students, including those studying in key fields.
In the announcement, Secretary of State Rubio said that the US State Department will also amend visa criteria to strengthen supervision of all future visa applications from China and Hong Kong (China).
According to the International Education Institute, China has the second highest number of international students studying at university in the US in the 2023/2024 school year with 277,398 students.
On May 27, it was reported that the US State Department had stopped interviewing candidates for study abroad visas and exchanges.
The Trump administration has expanded social media scanning of international students, and is seeking to increase deportations and revoke study permits as part of a broader effort to implement Trump's tough immigration agenda.
