Russia has provided new funding worth 9 billion USD for the Akkuyu nuclear power plant built by Russian state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom, the Turkish Energy Minister informed.
Rosatom is building Turkey's first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, Mersin province in the Mediterranean region.
The factory was built under a 2010 agreement worth 20 billion USD between Russia and Turkey.
The plant is expected to go into operation in 2025 but is being delayed and Ankara expects this nuclear power plant to go into operation in 2026.
This funding is very likely to be used in 2026-2027" - Mr. Bayraktar shared with reporters in Istanbul.
He said that Turkey is negotiating with South Korea, China, Russia and the United States on nuclear projects in Sinop province and Thrace region. He said that Ankara wants to receive "the most competitive offer".
Minister Bayraktar also shared that Turkey wants to produce nuclear power itself and aims to provide clear figures about the project.
Turkey is negotiating with Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power company on a 5,000 megawatt solar power project package.
We will complete this agreement in the first quarter of 2026, with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts in the early stages. We are talking about a 2,000 megawatt, 1,000 megawatt solar power project in Sivas as well as a 1,000 megawatt project in Taseli" - he said.
We are discussing a solar and storage energy project with another company from the Gulf region. The estimated investment cost of this project is about 1.5-2 billion USD" - Mr. Bayraktar revealed.
