Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said that Japan's deployment of US Typhon military complexes on its territory poses a direct threat to Russia's Far Eastern border.
He noted that Russia is "closely monitoring Japan's efforts to expand military operations".
We consider Tokyo's deployment of US medium and short-range missile systems on its territory, regardless of the deployment time (in stages, alternately or permanently) to be a move that has a serious negative impact on the stability and security of the Asia-Pacific region and poses a direct threat to Russia's Far Eastern border" - TASS news agency on July 19 quoted Deputy Minister Rudenko as saying.
The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized that Russia has repeatedly exchanged views with the Japanese side through various forms of diplomacy about this move.
In June, there was information that Typhon complexes, as well as the US HIMARS multiple launch missile system, had been transferred to Japan's Kanoya Air Force Base on Kyushu Island. The training to use these missile complexes will last until September.
According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, there are no plans to fire live ammunition in the exercises. In the final stage of this training activity, units from Australia will also participate in the Japan-US joint exercises.
This will be the second time the Typhon mobile ground missile system has been used in joint exercises in Japan. This missile was temporarily deployed at the Iwakuni US Marine Corps base in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, in September 2025. These complexes are also deployed in the northern Philippines.
On May 28, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia considers the joint exercises of the US and Japan, where the Typhon missile system will be deployed, as a move affecting Russia's interests and security in the region.
Also in an exchange with TASS on July 19, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said that Russia would respond correspondingly if South Korea also deployed the US Typhon missile system on its territory.
If it happens, it will be considered a threat to the security of the Russian Federation and it will lead to a proper response" - he said when answering questions about Moscow's reaction to Seoul's deployment of the US Typhon missile system on its territory.
However, Mr. Rudenko noted that the Russian Foreign Ministry currently has no information about South Korea's intention to implement such a move.
The US Typhon missile system can be used to launch SM-6 multi-role missiles and Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of about 2,000km.
