Russia - US meet at the top, bilateral relations exchange

Ngạc Ngư |

The first meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin during Trump's second term has many differences compared to the two times they met in 2018 and 2019.

Mr. Trump welcomed Mr. Putin in Alaska (USA) on August 15 with a warm attitude and friendly gestures. Mr. Putin set foot in the US territory for the first time in 10 years. This alone is enough to show that the policies of Western countries isolating Russia and Mr. Putin since the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict have gone bankrupt.

Mr. Trump's reception of Mr. Putin in the US has deepened the differentiation between the US and other Western members. This is the most important result for Mr. Putin since his recent meeting with Mr. Trump.

The joint press conference between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin also showed other special features. Mr Trump let Mr Putin speak first for nearly three hours.

Both of them gave each other kind words, calling each other Donald and Vladimir. Both positively assessed the developments and clearly expressed their satisfaction with the results of the meeting. Although they have not announced any agreements reached on bilateral relations and the Ukrainian conflict, both have determined to have reached consensus on many issues on the meeting's agenda.

Mr. Trump said that the two will soon talk to each other over the phone, or even meet each other again. Through that, it can be seen that although this meeting has not reached any agreement, has not revealed the shape of the peaceful political solution of the US and Russia for the Ukrainian conflict, has not resumed the ceasefire and ended the conflict, but has achieved many important results for both sides.

This makes both sides optimistic about the prospects of the process of improving bilateral relations and resolving the issue of Ukraine. Ukraine is not subject to any solution. The interests of Ukraine's allies are not put first, which is already disadvantageous for them and Ukraine. But at the same time, there was no mention of the US sanctions against Russia and a new letter to Russia. It can be seen that this meeting has changed the bilateral relationship compared to the previous time.

This meeting also changed the situation of the three sides between the US, Russia and Ukraine and their European allies. Mr. Putin has not made any fundamental changes other than confirming that Ukraine needs to be guaranteed security. However, this first of all makes it easier for Mr. Trump to talk to Ukraine and its allies in Europe. Mr. Putin also took the initiative to take advantage of Mr. Trump with a statement that if Mr. Trump were still US President in 2022, the Ukrainian conflict would not have occurred.

If the Trump - Putin pair fights like that, of course the Trump - Ukraine pair and its European allies will have more problems. Mr. Trump has predicted this development when he said that after the meeting in Alaska, it is time for Ukraine to negotiate with Russia on a ceasefire. In other words, Mr. Trump's message that the US and Russia have moved, now it is Ukraine and its allies in Europe also have to move.

Everyone knows that improving relations between the US and Russia and ending the Ukrainian conflict is difficult and complicated. Therefore, it depends on whether Russia and the US act in accordance with the orientation and spirit of the meeting results from the top in Alaska or not.
