Russia has transferred to India the 4th S-400 air defense system out of a total of 5 systems under a contract signed in 2018.
Hindustan Times newspaper said that the latest missile system handed over by Russia will be deployed in India before the end of May.
This source said that the pre-handover inspection of the new S-400 system, carried out by Indian Air Force officials, was completed on April 18. The 4th S-400 system supplied by Russia is on its way to India and is expected to arrive at the country's port in mid-May.
The new complex will be deployed in Rajasthan state to strengthen missile defense along India's border with Pakistan.
The 5th S-400 system is expected to be handed over in November this year and will be deployed in the border area of India with China.
In 2018, New Delhi signed an agreement to purchase 5 S-400 complexes with a total value of 5.43 billion USD. On March 27, this year, the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) under the Indian Ministry of Defense approved the purchase of additional S-400 air defense missile systems from Russia.
In Operation Sindoor that India launched in the fighting with Pakistan in May 2025, Russian S-400 missile complexes were deployed and were assessed as operating very effectively.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi then declared that India's air defense system, with the presence of the S-400, was a decisive factor in the operation.
India has decided to purchase 280 short-range and long-range S-400 missiles to supplement the stockpile used in Operation Sindoor, and at the same time build a long-range missile reserve force, as this operation is said to be not yet over.
It is estimated that India has launched 11 long-range S-400 missiles targeting Pakistani territory, hitting fighters, early warning systems and transport aircraft.
India is also considering establishing a private enterprise to maintain and repair the S-400, and at the same time has the ability to receive technology transfer.
