The Russian state-of-the-art T-90MS tank, which attracted attention at the IDEX defense exhibition in Abu Dhabi (UAE) in February 2025, has now been repainted and brought to the Ukrainian frontline, according to announcement from the Uvagonzavod manufacturer.
In a statement released on September 13, Uralvagonzavod said the upgraded T-90MS, incorporating experience drawn from the Ukrainian conflict, had been handed over to a combat unit and was currently directly participating in frontline combat.
According to a video posted by Russian media, the T-90MS initially appeared in Russia during a winter test, then was painted with sand to bring to the UAE to display in front of local authorities.
Immediately after the exhibition, tanks were brought to the factory, disguised as green and along with at least a dozen other T-90s transported by train from the Ural to the front.
Notably, Uralvagonzavod said the T-90MS's configuration has remained almost unchanged from the one on display in Abu Dhabi, except for paint.
This T-90MS version is equipped with explosive and grid-guided modules to fight against suicide UAVs - an increasingly popular weapon in the Ukrainian conflict.
In addition, tanks are also equipped with a modern fire control system with thermal cameras and TVs, but still keep the 125mm artillery capable of firing guided missiles.
A crew member shared with RIA: The increase is designed to be easy to maintain. If we have enough equipment, the repair will be very quick, and when there is a shortage, we still find a way. In India, there was a situation where the engine was replaced by... using two tamarind trees as a support".
Russia's launch of the T-90MS model on the battlefield is considered a move that is both experimental and shows off the capabilities of the defense industry. This move also sends the message that improvements drawn from the battlefield will be quickly applied in practice.
The appearance of the "steel animal" T-90MS in Ukraine raises many questions about its impact on the conflict front, as the war has entered its fourth year and both sides are actively seeking advantages in weapons technology.
