Many explosions and smoke columns rose in Venezuela's capital Caracas, amid escalating tensions with the US.

Al Jazeera reporters in Venezuela said that many loud explosions were heard and many columns of smoke rose in the capital Caracas.

Reuters reported that, according to witnesses, many loud explosions were heard in Caracas on the morning of January 3.

Other news agencies said that at least 7 explosions and low-flying planes were recorded in Caracas. The southern area of the city, near a large military base, is experiencing power outages.

According to CNN, the first explosion in Caracas was recorded at about 1:50 am on January 3, local time. "A loud explosion and my window shook because of it" - CNN reporter Osmary Hernandez informed.

Some areas of the Venezuelan capital are in power outages and CNN reporters in this country also heard many plane crashes after the series of explosions.

In recent days, Venezuela has said it is ready to negotiate an agreement with the US to combat drug trafficking.

On December 31, 2025, the US military attacked 5 boats accused of drug smuggling, killing at least 5 people.

The latest US attack has raised the total number of attacks on ships in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific to 35 and the number of deaths to at least 115, according to data released by the US. Among the victims are Venezuelan and Colombian citizens.
