Putin-Trump agree to immediately resolve Ukraine conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone on February 12, discussing many important issues, especially the Ukraine conflict.

This is the first high-level exchange between the two leaders since Mr. Trump returned to the White House. According to RT, the phone call lasted about 90 minutes.

The deal that ended millions of deaths

On the Truth Social platform, Mr. Trump declared the call "long and extremely productive," mentioning Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence and the position of the US dollar. Notably, the two sides agreed to "end the millions of deaths" in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and agreed to immediately start the peace negotiation process.

Putin invites Trump to Moscow, first meeting could be in Saudi Arabia

President Putin also invited President Trump to Moscow, although no date has been set. Meanwhile, Mr. Trump suggested Saudi Arabia as a potential location for the first meeting between the two leaders. He also suggested that the two could meet in the United States and Russia in the near future.

Prisoner exchange

Another notable issue is the prisoner exchange. According to the Kremlin, Washington is committed to fully implementing its obligations, although it did not disclose details.

However, US media said that this deal could be related to Marc Fogel - a former US Embassy employee convicted in Russia for drug smuggling, and Alexander Vinnik - a Russian cryptocurrency entrepreneur arrested in the US for money laundering.

America always considers Russia as an opponent.

Despite the positive signals, the White House has maintained a tough stance. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt stressed: “The United States views Russia as a major competitor, and sometimes an enemy.” However, she also affirmed that Mr. Trump always seeks to maintain diplomatic relations and promote peace.

EU does not want to be left out of negotiations

Immediately after the phone call, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that Europe and Ukraine must be involved in the peace process. “We cannot let peace be decided without Ukraine and Europe,” she told Politico.

The phone call that shaped 2025?

Deputy Speaker of the Russian Senate Konstantin Kosachev called it “the most important political event since the beginning of 2025.” Although he said “a breakthrough is still far away,” he remained optimistic about the prospects for Russia-US dialogue.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said both leaders supported the idea of resolving the Ukrainian conflict through diplomacy.

"President Trump advocated a quick cessation of hostilities and a peaceful resolution of the issue. For his part, President Putin stressed the need to eliminate the root causes of the conflict and agreed with President Trump that a lasting solution could be achieved through peaceful negotiations," the Kremlin spokesman said.

On the same day, President Donald Trump also spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying the conversation went “very well.” Mr. Trump affirmed that it was time to “end this senseless war.”
