On August 22, according to TASS news agency, US President Donald Trump said he would be happy if the law was changed to allow him to run for a third presidential term.
Speaking to supporters in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Mr. Trump shared: "According to current regulations, I am not allowed to run. If this regulation is changed, I will be very happy.
According to the US Constitution, Mr. Trump's second term is expected to end in January 2029. The 22nd Amendment, approved in 1951, stipulates that a person is not allowed to be elected US President more than twice. This regulation is currently a legal barrier to Mr. Trump's ability to continue running after his current term.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of running for a third term in the past. In mid-August, he also said that he wanted to run for re-election but admitted that current legal regulations are an obstacle to this plan.
Mr. Trump was first elected US President in 2016 and served from 2017 to 2021. After failing in the 2020 election, he returned to the White House after defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the November 2024 election.
Mr. Trump's second term begins in January 2025 and is expected to end in January 2029. His latest statement continues to attract attention to his ability to seek to maintain his political role after his current term ends.
