US President Donald Trump on June 11 (US time) declared that the US had " ended the conflict with Iran today", and said that the two sides had reached a "very strong memorandum of understanding" towards ending the conflict.
Speaking on June 11, Mr. Trump emphasized that Iran has agreed to never possess nuclear weapons. According to the US leader, this is Washington's core requirement and accounts for "95% of the agreement".
Mr. Trump has repeatedly affirmed that any peace agreement must ensure that Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons.
The statement was made after Mr. Trump announced the cancellation of the plan to attack Iran and said that the two sides could sign an agreement by the end of the week to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Talking to reporters at the White House, the US President said that Washington has just reached an important settlement agreement related to the conflict with Iran. He said the Strait of Hormuz will officially open immediately after the agreement is signed and this could happen very soon in Europe.
If completed, the agreement will mark a major diplomatic breakthrough to end the conflict that has lasted for more than three months between the US, Israel and Iran.
In a post on the social network Truth Social, Mr. Trump said that the airstrikes and bombing operations that were previously planned were cancelled thanks to negotiations that elevated Iran to the highest leadership level and received approval.
He also affirmed that the final core contents of the agreement have been agreed upon by relevant parties including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia and some other countries in the region.
However, Mr. Trump said that the US-led maritime blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz continues to be fully maintained.
On Tehran's side, Iran has not confirmed reaching an agreement with the US. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said that the country has not yet made a final decision on a feasible agreement with Washington and will not compromise on the "red lines" in negotiations.
Mr. Baghaei said that the information related to the time and location of the signing is still just speculation, and affirmed that nothing has been completed. According to him, most of the content of the negotiation document has been completed, but the US side has continuously changed its position throughout the negotiation process.
Iranian officials also made a number of demands to reach an agreement, including lifting international sanctions, releasing billions of USD of frozen assets and recognizing Tehran's control over the Strait of Hormuz.
