On September 15 (local time), OpenAI said it is cooperating with Anthropic and Google to establish an autonomous agency in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.
This idea originated from the proposal of Mr. Demis Hassabis - head of Google DeepMind - to model the US Financial Regulatory Authority (FINRA) to strictly test the most powerful AI models before licensing their public release.
Speaking at a conference organized by Salesforce in San Francisco, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the necessity of cross-industry cooperation, while acknowledging that the fierce race between businesses and countries is raising fears that technological safety is being underestimated.
Leaders of major technology companies such as Anthropic and DeepMind have also spoken out in support of reducing development speed to prioritize risk control.
However, the alliance move between US corporations has faced strong reactions from startups and lawmakers.
Mr. Aidan Gomez - co-founder and CEO of AI Cohere (Canada) - accused the big guys of trying to form an alliance to manipulate the rules of the game and oppress smaller competitors under the guise of safety.
Meanwhile, US Senator Bernie Sanders affirmed that it is not possible to delegate self-determination to businesses, but that there need to be legally binding international regulations.
In the opposite direction, on September 14, through posts on the social network Truth Social, US President Donald Trump rejected warnings about the AI disaster, calling it a "deceptive trick".
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also opposed the pessimistic views, saying that recent warnings are excessively alarming and irresponsible for the development of the entire technology industry.
