Russian Deputy Chairman of the Security Council assesses the possibility of AI destroying humanity

AI is unlikely to destroy humanity, but serious damage is possible, the Vice Chairman of the Russian Security Council said.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is unlikely to destroy humanity, but serious damage is possible, Russian Security Council Vice Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said, TASS reported on September 14.

Commenting on the speculations of AI developers themselves, who "complained about humanity's haste" and warned that "AI is dangerous, unpredictable and is developing too fast according to rules that we do not understand", Mr. Medvedev said they are not sincere.

People who create generative AIs are not honest. Not you and me, or Homo sapiens in general, are what they worry about. They are not afraid that an AI that is out of control, infatuated with its power, will destroy humanity. That kind of outcome is unlikely to happen," he said.

According to the Vice Chairman of the Russian Security Council, a more worrying prospect lies in operational incidents.

More realistically, it is a scenario in which software using advanced AI to operate a large manufacturing facility or a traffic hub will cause serious damage. For example, letting a plane crash in mid-air or destroying a nuclear power plant. And then someone will turn to generative AI developers - to impose on them lawsuits worth billions of USD, or simply take action against themselves," Medvedev said.

Are these fears real or not? Especially when many wise people like Musk and others have said that for a long time. The answer is very simple: they are real. By the way, I myself also wrote about this in a recent article in a magazine," he added.

Mr. Medvedev said that "the most obvious solution will be for countries to unite on common principles in AI management".
