As of 11 am on September 6 (local time), the death toll from the landslide in a village in Toai Xuyen district, Cat An city, Jiangxi province has increased to 2 cases, while the search for 10 missing people is still being urgently deployed amidst the dangerous terrain.
The mud and rock disaster and landslide occurred at about 4 am on September 5 (local time) due to many days of torrential rain under the influence of Typhoon Saudel.
Faced with the scale of damage and the risk of continued landslides, the Jiangxi Provincial Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Relief Committee activated a level III emergency response.
Preliminary statistics show that Typhoon Saudel has directly affected the lives of about 161,500 residents throughout Jiangxi province.
The Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources also decided to raise the level of geological disaster response for Jiangxi province from level IV to level III at 11 am on September 5, and immediately sent a working group to the scene to directly direct rescue efforts.
Chinese authorities have mobilized hundreds of firefighters, 41 specialized vehicles, hillside scanning radar equipment and drones to both speed up search and rescue, and urgently evacuate households in dangerous areas to prevent secondary risks.
