After the US airstrike on three Iranian nuclear facilities, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was in Moscow to consult with Russian President Vladimir Putin and senior officials. The visit aims to discuss regional and international developments, following what Iran considers an aggression from the US and Israel.
Before the trip, Mr. Araghchi affirmed that the strategic partnership between Iran and Russia calls Russia a "friend of Iran". Meanwhile, Russian Security Council Vice Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said that some countries are ready to directly provide nuclear weapons to Iran, although the country's name was not specific.
The US attack took place in the early morning of June 22, local time. This is Washington's first reaction after a long period of hesitation on escalating developments between Iran and Israel. Iran's leaders immediately took a strong backlash. Advisor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei - Mr. Ali Akbar Velayati - said that US military bases involved in the attack would be considered legitimate targets.
In that context, the UN Security Council held an urgent meeting at 3:00 p.m. on June 22, US time, to discuss the escalating situation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the US airstrike marked a dangerous turning point, and condemned all military acts that could lead to escalating tensions in the Middle East. He stressed that the region could not endure another destructive revenge spinout.
Russia, China and Pakistan have submitted a draft resolution to the Security Council, calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the region. The draft also condemns attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.
It is not yet clear when the Security Council will vote. According to regulations, the draft must have at least 9 votes in favor and must not be denied by 1 of the 5 standing members to be approved. Russia, China and Pakistan have asked the remaining members to submit their opinions before the evening of June 23. However, the possibility of a US objection still exists, which could prevent the resolution from being passed.
