The Russian military has dropped one of the most powerful bombs in its arsenal on a Ukrainian ammunition depot in the southern Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), RT reported, citing the Russian Ministry of National Defence on October 3.
The Russian military attacked the ammunition storage facility in the village of Razliv, about 23km west of Kurakhovo, a major logistics hub used by Kiev forces in the region. The village is also about 20km northeast of Velikaya Novoselka, a town in Donbass that has been turned into a fortress by the Ukrainian military.
A short clip released by the Russian Ministry of National Defense on Telegram shows the FAB-3000 super bomb being dropped on a cluster of buildings on the outskirts of the village. The massive explosion shook the area, sending thick gray smoke billowing into the sky.
The FAB series of bombs are designed to destroy enemy defenses or fortifications as well as military industrial facilities. The hardened bomb casing is capable of penetrating ceiling beams of multi-story buildings while keeping the bomb relatively intact before detonation.
The FAB-3000 is one of the most powerful bombs of its kind, with only a few other models capable of greater destruction. Weighing over 3 tons, the bomb carries an explosive charge equivalent to nearly 1.4 tons of TNT.
This year, the Russian military began equipping the FAB-3000 bomb with a new Unified Guidance Module and Lifting Wing (UMPK). This innovation is intended to improve the bomb’s accuracy and range, addressing identified shortcomings in the current version of the UMPK. The unified lifting wing is designed to transform older free-fall bombs into precision weapons.
Initially, the UMPK was used with smaller FAB series bombs such as the FAB-250 or FAB-500. The first FAB-3000 bombs fitted with the UMPK were used in mid-June.
In another development, on October 3, the Russian Ministry of National Defense confirmed the capture of the important Ukrainian stronghold town of Ugledar - a strategically important location located on a hill and with high-rise buildings overlooking the surrounding plains.
Located about 40km southeast of Razliv, Ugledar has been the scene of fierce battles on several occasions in the past as Russian forces sought to gain control of the town.
Although not a transport and logistics hub like Pokrovsk, Ugledar was heavily fortified and considered an important bastion at the junction of Ukraine's eastern and southern fronts. The capture of Ugledar was seen by many observers as a strategic victory for Russia.
