At least 113 people have been killed and many others injured, according to the Zaporizhzhia Military Administration. Photos of the scene show both personal and public vehicles on fire in large numbers.
According to the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's office, some high-rise apartment buildings and industrial production facilities were also damaged. The debris from the bombs hit a bus with passengers inside.
Rescue forces were immediately mobilized and cleared the scene that evening.
In an interview, head of the Zaporizhzhia Military Administration said the Russian military used two cruise missiles in the airstrike on January 8.
Mr. Fedorov continued to share that out of 60 injured patients who had to be hospitalized, 10 were in critical condition.
On the morning of January 9 (local time), Fedorov said on national television that Zaporizhzhia's health services are at an unprecedented level of overload since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.
On social network X, President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the West to continue to put pressure on Russia.
Zaporizhzhia has also been hit by frequent airstrikes from Moscow, according to Reuters.
The cause of the attack is not yet clear and Moscow has not commented on the incident.
