According to the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, at least 113 people were killed and many more injured. Photos from the scene showed a series of personal and public vehicles on fire.
Several high-rise apartment buildings and industrial facilities were also damaged, according to the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office. Fragments of the bombs hit a bus with passengers on board.
Rescue forces were immediately mobilized and cleared the scene that evening.
In an interview, the head of the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration, Ivan Fedorov, said the Russian military used two cruise missiles in the airstrike on January 8.
Mr. Fedorov continued to share that, of the 60 injured patients who had to be hospitalized, 10 were in critical condition.
On the morning of January 9 (local time), Mr. Fedorov said on national television that Zaporizhzhia's medical services were at an unprecedented level of overload since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.
On social network X, President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the West to continue putting pressure on Russia.
Also according to Reuters, Zaporizhzhia is a place that regularly suffers airstrikes from Moscow.
The cause of the attack is not yet clear and Moscow has not commented on the incident.
