RT reported that on January 6, Russian authorities announced that they were preparing to issue a ban on drivers holding anything that "causes distraction" while driving.
At present, while driving, drivers are only prohibited from using their phones to text or make calls.
However, with these new changes, drivers are forced to focus completely on driving. Both hands are only for holding the steering wheel or the handlebars, not for holding any other objects that could distract from driving.
This means that drivers will not be allowed to hold food, drink or even smoke while driving.
Violators are expected to be detected through automated traffic cameras, which are already used to record speeding and seat belt violations.
According to APA, Russian traffic cameras are also capable of detecting small pieces of trash thrown through windows, from transparent plastic cups to cigarette butts.
Littering while driving is also considered a traffic violation in Russia. Fines range from 5,000 rubles to 100,000 rubles (about $46 to $930) depending on the case.
RT reported that the fine for holding a “distracting” object in your hand while driving will be around 1,500 rubles (equivalent to 14 USD).
It is not yet clear when the new ban will take effect, but the changes are awaiting final approval after being reviewed and approved by experts.
