Responding to Russian news agency TASS on the sidelines of the BRICS media summit, Myanmar's Information Minister Maung Maung Ohn said Myanmar wants to join BRICS as an observer country.
"We are ready to join BRICS as an observer country without full membership," said Maung Maung Ohn.
Minister Maung Maung Ohn added that Myanmar officials are interested in participating in the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, although they have not yet received an invitation.
"In the future, we want to apply to join BRICS as a full member. Many countries in the region, including in ASEAN, have applied and we also want to do the same," Minister Maung Maung Ohn noted.
The 7th BRICS Media Summit took place in Moscow, Russia from September 13 to 17, with the participation of leading directors and experts from more than 60 media organizations from 45 countries. The conference was organized by the Russian state news agency TASS, which celebrated its 120th anniversary on September 1.
For the first time, the Media Summit is being held in the new format of the BRICS Media Forum, a non-commercial, non-governmental platform for dialogue between leading media of BRICS member countries.
The BRICS Media Forum was established in 2015 at the initiative of Xinhua News Agency and has since been hosted annually by the country holding the rotating BRICS presidency.
Russia takes over the BRICS presidency from January 1, 2024. All BRICS events in Russia are organized by the Roscongress Foundation.
